Questions You Should be Asking Your Photographer
We’ve all been there—you’re chatting with a photographer, wrapping up a consult or message thread, and they ask the golden question:
“Do you have any questions for me?”
And just like that, poof—every question you had disappears from your mind. Totally normal, and it happens to the best of us!
That’s exactly why I’ve created this helpful guide: to give you a head start on the questions you should be asking your photographer before booking a session. Whether it’s your first shoot ever or your tenth, being prepared helps ensure that you and your photographer are totally aligned—and that you feel confident and excited going into your session.
1. What types of sessions do you specialize in?
This is a great place to start! Every photographer has their strengths and favorite types of shoots. Some focus on weddings or families, others love boudoir, branding, or maternity. Finding someone who loves to shoot the kind of session you’re planning means you’ll likely get a better experience—and better results.
2. What’s your photography and editing style?
Photography is art, and every photographer has their own unique touch. Are they more light and airy, bold and colorful, or dark and moody? Do they pose clients or shoot in a more candid, documentary style? Look through their portfolio and ask them to describe their vibe. Make sure it aligns with what you're envisioning!
3. Can I see a full gallery from a past session?
Social media highlights are great, but a full gallery shows consistency and gives you a better idea of what to expect—from start to finish.
4. What’s the turnaround time for receiving my photos?
This one is important! Some photographers deliver galleries in a week or two, while others may take up to 6–8 weeks depending on the season and session type. It's good to know how long after your session you can expect your photos. This is especially important if you’re working with a deadline (like announcements or holiday cards).
5. What’s included in your package?
Will your gallery include 20 images or 100? Will you receive digital downloads, prints, or both? Is there a client portal or online gallery? This helps you understand what you’re paying for and what to expect after the session. Make sure to get a breakdown of what's included in the pricing. Are travel fees included? Do you get outfit changes? Is hair and makeup offered or recommended? Having clarity here prevents surprises later on.
6. Do you offer help with styling or choosing locations?
Some photographers offer styling guides, outfit consultations, or even access to a client closet. Others might help you choose the perfect location or even scout a spot just for your shoot. Don’t be afraid to ask!
7. What happens if the weather is bad or something comes up?
If your shoot is outdoors, it’s smart to ask about rescheduling policies or rain plans. Life happens—knowing your photographer’s policies ahead of time gives you peace of mind.
8. How should I prepare for the session?
A good photographer will help guide you through the prep process. This might include tips on what to wear, what to bring, and how to make the most out of your time in front of the lens.
9. Do you have a contract?
This question goes with question number 7. A contract protects both you and the photographer. It outlines expectations, payment terms, cancellation policies, and other important details. Always make sure there’s one in place. It is important to understand your contract to make sure you and the photographer are on the same page in case something was to happen.
10. What’s the vibe like during your sessions?
This might sound like a small thing, but it matters. Are sessions relaxed and candid? More styled and posed? Finding a photographer whose vibe matches yours makes the whole experience more comfortable—and fun!
